Exploring Chernivtsi with Friends and Volunteers

Both, SVIT Ukraine and Action Reconciliation for Peace have started their annual clean-up in the Jewish cemetery of Chernivtsi (Czernowitz). Despite the hot weather the volunteers bravely remove the rampant vegetation of the cemetery. Being with them is a good pretext to stroll through the beautiful city.

My friends Marla and Jay as well as my cousin Nana returned to Lviv today in the early morning. Yesterday, we had a little walk through the northern part of Chernivtsi – once the Jewish part of the city and the ghetto during fall of 1941.

Today, I offered the volunteers of SVIT Ukraine an excursion to Sadagora. The small town was once an important Hasidic court. The synagogue has recently been renovated and will soon become a hotspot for Hasidic pilgrims.

It was also a pleasure to meet Mimi and Milton Taylor today, both are dear friends since years. Mimi was born in Chernivtsi in 1937 and is a leading activist for the presevation of the Jewish cemetery. It was wonderful to see her sharing her memories with the young volunteers of SVIT. Thank you Mimi and Milton, I hope to see you soon!

  1. So great to see your posts and to know that you and Mimi continue to be part of the project. I am now in Berlin working on a Wikipedia for Peace project, writing and translating entries about refugees. The people are from 12 countries, one from Ukraine. He knew immediately about the cemetery project, I guess because there aren’t that many projects in Ukraine.
